Initially created as a companion piece to our work and how to be in two places at once (2013), Anthem for a Porcelain Generation has become a pedagogical and creative site of inquiry of its own. An ongoing choreography project we undertake with student dancers during residencies at colleges and universities, each Anthem in the series is an exploration of contemporary connectedness that interrogates the students’ complex relationships with social media platforms, communication, and each other. Instigated by common questions about intimacy, connection, and uses of technology, each dance is imagined, choreographed, shaped, and realized by the individualities of its collaborators. Iterations have been made at Colby College (2014), University of North Carolina, Charlotte (2016), University of Buffalo (2016), and University of New Mexico (2017).
